ABOUT DR MIDDLEMAN

AN ESTABLISHED BACKGROUND
AN EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE
A SOLID EXPERTISE

Mark Middleman has been undertaking medicolegal work since 1988. Since 1991, it has been his predominant area of practice.

He has therefore seen all the changes which have taken place in the industry over the years both from a medical viewpoint (eg the “whiplash” controversy) and also the legal viewpoint (CPR & MOJ duties). He has lived with, and adapted to, these successive changes over many years, giving him an established background in the industry. Relatively few medical practitioners in this field can lay claim to such extensive experience.

Dr Middleman has a particular interest in the area of Whiplash-associated Disorder; and has a large personal library, constantly developing, on the independent medical literature of this topic. Dr Middleman’s background and training is in the field of General Practice and he was awarded Membership of the Royal College in 1985. He remains an active College member, fully participating in the cyclical Revalidation programme laid down by the General Medical Council, to promote excellence in practice. This includes the annual peer-appraisal process. All of this ensures that he keeps up-to-date in all issues relevant to general practice, as well as the areas of his particular interest, in which regular continuing professional development is also undertaken.

In 2016 Dr Middleman was awarded the Cardiff University Law School Civil Expert Witness Certificate. This qualification, along with his evidence of ongoing continuing professional development, enables him to hold a current entry in the National Register of University Certified Expert Witnesses. In 2020, he was also admitted to Membership of The Academy of Experts, after submitting to the rigorous vetting procedure of that body.

In 2024, Dr Middleman was elected to Fellowship of The Royal College of General Practitioners, in recognition of his contribution towards excellence in the field of medico-legal expertise at the GP level.

The introduction of the “Whiplash Reforms” in 2021 led to new and particular demands upon the medical expert, in terms of appreciating the medical and legal issues involved in the production of a quality report. The medical report now, more than ever, needs to be comprehensively robust in its addressing of the Reforms’ requirements. Dr Middleman has actively engaged in the Reform process, has undertaken appropriate training, and is fully conversant with the intricacies of the new regulations, in terms of whiplash v. non-whiplash injuries, uplift, minor psychological injuries, and so on.

Instructing solicitors/agencies can therefore be confident that when instructing Dr Middleman in their personal injury cases, they are instructing an expert witness who has a solid and developing expertise, both medically and in relation to legal requirements.
